Dystopian Wars: Competitive Ramblings

  I’ve been ruminating on the general concepts of how to win at Dystopian Wars for the Warsaw tournament, and I figured I’d write it up for people to argue over. This is aimed primarily at 2000 points, though I’ve written a bit about the differences to 1500 below. It's a bit rambley, though I hope the core idea comes through.   Haunebus preparing to drop some SCIENCE on Canadians As for baseline conditions: Tournaments here are run with good levels of terrain and a houserule limiting lists to a maximum of 50% aerial units. I don’t think the conclusions listed here are significantly altered by this house rule, though it does make Iron Skies harder to run. Dystopian Wars: Basic Statistics

When comparing units, one of the first things we usually care about is their damage output. Of course, that doesn’t tell the whole story, but it’s always useful to know how much you can expect your units to do. I’m not particularly good at statistics, so I threw together a little program to validate these (plus I couldn’t figure out sustained with statistics alone). Result Multipliers Repairs: 0.33 Defense Dice: 0.5 Obscured (Dice don’t explode): 0.8333 Heavy Hits count as Hits: 0.8 No Modifiers: 1 Reroll Blanks: 1.16 Devastating: 1.2 Sustained: Between 1.27 and 1.2, depending on dice pool size. Reroll Blanks + Sustained: Between 1.405 and 1.366, depending on dice pool size. Fusilade: 1.33 Fusilade + Sustained: 1.5 These are multipliers on the expected successes per dice. You can multiply these with each other if more than one applies, except for sustained with other reroll effects. Armoured Clash: The Battle for the Hill Fort (2K Union vs Crown)

  Got another game in against Crown, moving up to 2K points. We’re still sticking with a 4ft x 4ft battlefield as recommended, and we played Lord of the Manor this time. I even took notes this time! Union Forces ready to manifest some destiny Deployment Lord of the Manor doesn’t leave much room for creativity. I deployed my mechs centrally to stay out of LoS from the Galahad and Monarch brick. I figured I could tank a bit of fire from the Mordreds on my heavy mechs or lakota. MOABs went behind a hill as is their custom. Iron Horses went in reserves to again try Artillery hunting (now at full strength), and the Blazers went a bit further on the flank to hopefully not get murdered immediately. A wave of Crown Steel Crown formed a brick of all the TANKS on their left flank, with the Mordreds on and the Bors behind their central hill.
